July 9th: Close encounters with Indian Tacos

One lone bison out the rear window of our camper as we woke up, I guess he must have been late for Sunday’s party.

We drove up to Deadwood and Lead, SD but didn’t find what I had expected to see, an old west town.  Instead Deadwood is now all about gambling and bars.  Oh well, can’t win them all.  We did visit the Adams Museum and learned the history of the area including about Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane but were soon on our way.  Leaving there we stopped in Cheyenne Crossing, a hole-in-the-wall crossroads for Indian Tacos at the café as recommended by the camp ground hosts back in Custer SP.  The food was great!  On up Spearfish Canyon for waterfall sightings

And then we journeyed west to Devils Tower in Wyoming.  When they say it holds your attention, they aren’t kidding.  I could barely take my eyes off of it.  Definitely worth the trip.

We spent the night at the NPS campground in the park and met three bicyclists who are making the trip from Portland, Oregon to New York City.  Shared some of our beers with them (gratefully received!) and heard a few of their stories.  The evening program in the ampitheater was on rock climbing the Tower and added to the knowledge we started to acquire yesterday.
