Today was another day on the road on our way to South Dakota. We got an early start and regained I-90 for the journey west. Crossed the Mississippi, hit the Welcome Center and found that there didn't seem to be much to southern Minnesota except 250-plus miles of pretty flat farmland. Unless you want to count electricity producing windmills that pepper the landscape. We passed by double figures of windmill farms with some of them having 100-plus windmills each. Pretty impressive stuff.
So we're just driving across this state minding our own business when I spy an advertising sign for The Spam Museum. Say what? Say Yes! We're going! Austin, MN is the headquarters of the Hormel Company and guess what their most famous product is? Yup, Spam. The museum(free!) took a lighthearted but informative approach to the history of Spam including its role in World War II and of course at the end there was a gift shop. Did you know that there were about sixteen different flavors of Spam? Guess what we'll be eating for the rest of this trip. We get out of the museum, it's lunch time and I'm hungry. Just down the street is an A&W. A hotdog and a mug of rootbeer and Life Is Good. What more patriotic way can there be to celebrate Independence Day than with those most American of foods, Spam and A&W rootbeer?
Next stop was the South Dakota Welcome Center where we lucked into a gentleman who really loved his job and told us more about the sights of the state than we could hope to absorb, but we came away with greqt ideas for our time in the Black Hills.
We spent the night at the Lake Vermillion State Reccreation Area in a brand new campground. Nice sites, clean showers, a good swimming beach, and steaks on the grill. A good end to a long travel day.
